Destination Las Vegas Part 1: Mehndi

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of doing a destination wedding at the beautiful Wynn Hotel and Casino. If you have been to Vegas and have not yet stopped to see the Wynn and its sister property Encore, I highly recommend you do so! The attention to detail is beyond words from the chandeliers to the drapery to the stunning flowers that are done in house. It does make a difference that Steve Wynn himself lives on the property and walks the floors almost everyday to make sure everything is up to his very high standards. He truly brought class back to Vegas with these 2 properties.

We were so excited that our clients chose Wynn Las Vegas for their wedding because there are so many gorgeous spots on the property, namely the Golf Course Lawn where the ceremony was held. It has stunning views of the grounds with a gorgeous cascading waterfall that is so picturesque which happened to be the backdrop for the ceremony.

The mehndi and reception were both held at the Encore in the Brahms ballroom which has a gorgeous private patio that overlooks the pools.

Preston Bailey designed these gorgeous floral structures for the hotel that have over 100k flowers!

Mehndi Night

We designed the room to have 4 Pergola tents in each corner that would house the food stations and the mehndi artist. The dance floor would have moroccan furniture around it and the stage centerpiece would be a beautiful jhula decorated with fresh flowers that came from LA.  Our colors were fuschias, oranges, yellows and reds.

We wanted to create a very fluid environment with the food stations which included an action dosa station from MINT Bistro and a thai and slider station from the hotel-so delicious!

Flowers were marigolds, mums, daisies, and roses

The Grand Del Mar Wedding Experience 2012

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

We had such a wonderful and relaxing weekend at the beautiful Grand Del Mar in San Diego. The carnival-themed party was so entertaining and the ballroom was completely transformed. We were spoiled with games, special treats and the company of good friends.

We also got an opportunity to visit the beautiful San Diego Zoo Safari Park where we were able to observe some interesting and exotic animals. We also experienced a lovely and delicious dinner at the Addison. Thank you Grand Del Mar and everyone who made this weekend so great!

Marvelous Mandaps

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Designing a mandap is an artform all it’s own. The mandap is the focal point and sacred four-pillared structure of the wedding ceremony, where the exchanging of wedding vows takes place surrounded by family and the sacred fire. The mandap is symbolic and represents the four Vedas and the four goals of a fulfilled life, which are Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. Each pillar of the mandap represents the support and strength of each parent of the bride and groom. The day before the wedding ceremony, an important ritual known as Mandap Mahurat or Mandap Ropan is held to bless the mandap.

We put great care and thought into the design of our mandaps, working closely with our clients to ensure everything is absolutely perfect. We hope you enjoy these examples of beautiful mandaps!

Hummingbird Nest Ranch

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Hummingbird Nest Ranch is one of our favorite venues! The views are breathtaking and the space is expansive. The ranch is located in the Santa Susana Mountains, less than a half hour from L.A. and it’s outdoor spaces are great for ceremonies, receptions, and private events for up to 5,000 guests! The Spanish architecture and décor with it’s olive trees, stone fountains is so beautiful and timeless.

The staff at Hummingbird Nest Ranch are so accommodating and professional and they operate in an eco-friendly manner. The venue also has no noise restrictions or curfew (for those of you who like to dance all night long!) We’ve designed several weddings, events and photo shoots at Hummingbird Nest Ranch and we highly recommend this venue for your special day! Have a look at some examples of our work at Hummingbird.

What is a Mehndi?

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

For those of you who are not familiar with the Mehndi, or Henna Ceremony, we’d like to explain this important tradition. The Mehndi typically takes place one or two days before the actual wedding day ceremony. The bride usually wears a green dress or yellows/orange for the Henna celebration. The groom will typically wear a casual Shalwar Qameez. The bride and groom are brought forward in the ceremony under a decorative dupatta by their close relatives. In the bridal ceremony, married women who are closely related to the bride apply henna to her hands, and feed her sweets. This ritual brings good luck and longevity to the bride’s married life. Similarly, on the groom’s side, oil is applied to his head and sweets are fed to him as well.

A song competition also occurs in the Rasme Henna or Mehndi celebrations between the bride and groom’s side. Young women and men will sing teasing songs about the other side (where the bride’s side pokes good natured fun at the groom’s side and vice versa). Elaborate musical and acting performances are a fun and colorful part of the Mehndi celebrations. Choreographed dance sequences and competitions between the bride and groom’s families are also quite common these days and are a lot of fun to experience!

Traditionally, the Mehndi was considered a women’s event and men did not participate in it. The singing and dancing was left almost entirely to women. This has changed quite a bit and today, men participate in the Mehndi celebrations as well. Usually, a color theme for the Mehndi is announced and guests are supposed to dress up in a particular color. Commonly used colors are bright reds, oranges and yellows. Enjoy these photos of Sabrina and Osman’s Mehndi!

Youngsong Martin of Wildflower Linen

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

What name-brand designer decor items have graced all of the following:

  • The exclusive post-Oscars Governor’s Ball and Vanity Fair after-parties.
  • VIP events at several Presidential libraries.
  • World-premiere parties at the Venice Film Festival in Italy and the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
  • A private dinner for the power foursome of Michelle and Barack Obama and actress-model Carla Bruni and her husband, French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
  • The pivotal wedding scenes of  The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn movie about the passions of young vampires and werewolves.
  • Gala nuptial celebrations at Seoul, South Korea’s most prestigious hotel.
  • Numerous reality TV shows about Hollywood celebrity lifestyles and wedding designers.
  • Countless pictorial spreads in major design-oriented fashion magazines.
  • Hundreds of glamorous parties, receptions and banquets at the nation’s most luxurious hotels, resorts and private clubs.

In each instance, the high-fashion hallmarks were luxurious table linens and chair covers from Wildflower Linen, designed by company founder Youngsong Martin.

Martin, whose petite stature and demure bearing contrast with her entrepreneurial dynamism and business accomplishments, is the haute couture design veteran who changed career trajectories to propel Wildflower Linen into international prominence in the special event and wedding industries.

Since launching Wildflower Linenin 2001, Youngsong has redefined the concept of “designer” rental linens while creating special event decor for presidential mansions, famed party planning professionals, style-conscious bride and grooms, the U.S. State Department, red carpet events of all kinds, and such entertainment superstars as Oprah Winfrey and Elton John.

She has also developed a nationwide clientele for her Southern California-based company while launching six high-style Wildflower Linen showrooms in Orange County, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Scottsdale,  and Utah’s world-renowned Deer Valley-Park City alpine resort area.

Youngsong Martin’s international acclaim has grown meanwhile through such alliances as her exclusive wedding design consultancy for the luxurious Lotte Hotel Seoul, renowned as one of Asia’s premier banquet venues and travel destinations.

Media profiles of her linen designs, in everything from Wall Street Journal to fashion magazines, recently included a cover story feature about Youngsong in a “most innovative people” edition of BizBash, the special event industry’s foremost trade publication.

Youngsong also has appeared in several design-oriented reality TV and documentary series on U.S. and foreign broadcast and cable networks and on radio and TV talk/interview shows internationally.

Additional prestige has come through numerous official commendations and awards for her accomplishments as an entrepreneur and manager, including accolades from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the U.S. Congress, the California Legislature, and noted business and charitable organizations.

After Martin founded Wildflower Linen, the former women’s fashion designer was acclaimed for having reinvented the field of table linen and chair cover rentals, by virtue of her elegant designs, custom-milled textiles, hand-decorated accents, and haute couture attitude. Youngsong’s fashion-forward and classic decor signatures now regularly form indelible impressions of glamour and luxury at private estates, famed resorts, country clubs, hotels and other landmark venues that host high-society soirées, celebrity awards events, stylish weddings and corporate functions of all kinds.

Youngsong trained as a fashion designer in her native South Korea and in San Francisco before creating namesake lines of women’s apparel that she marketed through upscale boutiques and department stores nationwide. She also was a senior instructor at the prestigious Otis/Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. In devising the business model for Wildflower Linen, she melded her affinity for entertaining and fine dining with her expert knowledge of textiles and custom-tailored fabrications.

Launched on a small scale, Wildflower Linen has grown to become a preferred source for celebrity event planners, leading hotel and catering executives, and discerning organizers of corporate and social functions. Youngsong’s custom table linens and chair covers have adorned gala affairs in country clubs and famed resorts, at private Grammy Awards parties, aboard charter yachts, in lavish alfresco nuptials at two Presidential libraries, even via export to the world-premiere party for a DreamWorks animated classic at the Venice Film Festival.

Among Youngsong Martin’s newest business initiatives is her foray into retailing at the chic Wildflower Linen showroom in Costa Mesa, California, at the upscale South Coast Collection design center, which is home to the attention-getting OC Mart Mix of hip boutiques and epicurean cafes. On Saturdays, SoCo Collection also hosts Orange County’s biggest farmers market and gourmet-food-truck roundup. Catering to style- conscious residents of the neighboring Newport Coast communities, the newly refashioned Wildflower Linen showroom now offers an exclusive array of unique home decor items, gourmet tablewares and artisanal accessories – while still showcasing Youngsong’s extensive array of designer rental linens.

Youngsong is now speaking at the Inspire Smart Success Experience in Riviera Maya, Mexico; a series of events for wedding professionals and small business owners to gain insightful information in order to grow their brand.
