Getting Ready for the Second Annual Luxe Hotels Wedding Event!

Wednesday, March 4th, 2015

As we are approaching the Second Annual Luxe Hotels Wedding Event, we thought it’d be fun to highlight last year’s event. We are thrilled to be on the Host Committee again this year and are looking forward to a great evening on March 9th! For more information, visit the Luxe Hotels Wedding Event website, or click on the flyer below.

This was such an exciting planning process! Getting to know Renee Strauss was an inspiration. We also loved being fully taken care of by the Luxe Hotel each time we went there for meeting!

Renee Strauss used to be a retail queen for high-end wedding gown designers. She left the retail business and became the wedding ambassador for Luxe Hotels all over the world. This was her first high-end wedding event with Luxe. She approached us to be part of the host committee, which entailed collaborate design of the event, influence in social media, getting to know the layout of the property, and communication with hotel staff.

Planning and designing consisted of developing a concept for our 15 x 27 foot space. We decided on an ombre color scheme of radiant orchid pink, the color of the year. Our phenomenal table linens and chair covers were done by Wildflower Linens.

We  really wanted to do something different than the typical floral centerpiece, so we created a tress atop square tables and hung flowers from top and bottom. Eddie from Tic-Tock flowers did an outstanding job. It was whimsical, but sophisticated. The zigzag effect of  the tables gave it a multi-dimensional look.

Diann Valentine, a co-host and very creative and edgy designer, recently did a wedding at the St. Regis with a hanging cake structure, so we wanted to incorporate that cake and that created a very big WOW factor.

On the sweetheart table, which was an Exquisite Events design, we used silver from the Exquisite Events line. This included jewelry boxes as favors, large silver bowls for the floral center pieces, and lovely silver chargers.
Luxe_Event_0102 Luxe_Event_0149

The backdrop was also unique. Instead of the typical drapery, we wanted to do something a little different to cover up the back wall. We had panels in pinks light to dark accompanying tables of the opposite shade.

Guests loved our space! We were so happy to hear comments all night with so much positive feedback.

Another highlight of the night was the Sareh Nouri fashion show. The detail on her gowns is extraordinary – the French lace, the roughing, and the embellishments were gorgeous. Her line had old world charm and a Grace Kelly feel.

About 300 brides and grooms-to-be were in attendance, and everyone enjoyed the fabulous hors devours, desserts, and open bar.

The night was a great success, and we are looking forward to future events with Renee and Luxe Hotels.
Have an Exquisite day, and see you next Wednesday!

The Grand Del Mar Wedding Experience

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015

It is rare for planners to attend events where they are able to sit and enjoy the event and be pampered along the way.  During Christmas, Paige Levy and Charles Stuart of San Diego Hotels: The Grand Del Mar – A San Diego Luxury Hotel hosted “A trip around the world in 24 hours.” They invited about 60 planners for a lovely evening of dinner and dancing and spared no detail!

The Grand Del Mar Experience 2

The Grand Del Mar Experience 17

We checked in to the hotel, where each of us had our own King size luxury room overlooking the stunning grounds of the property. Hair and makeup appointments were set up for us by Call Me Beautiful where we were able to get dolled up for the evening festivities.

The Grand Del Mar Experience 15

As soon as we got ready, we headed to the hotel lobby for cocktail hour and this was where we were able to mingle and meet with all our friends in the industry.

All of us were quite curious as to what was in store for the rest of the evening. We were escorted to the main ballroom and as the ballroom doors opened we were greeted by an incredible 20 piece band from Westcoast Music.

The decor was absolutely spectacular with video mapped images of Italy and France on the walls. It felt as though we were in a Tuscan-Mediterranean dream. The tablescape was stunning by Kathy Wright and the furniture was nothing less than spectacular from Revelry Event Designers.

Nikki Speaks at ISS Experience in Cancun

Wednesday, December 24th, 2014

PP Cancun 1

Nikki was approached by ISSE to speak in Cancun in the beginning of November.  The topic was “producing cross cultural weddings with ease.”  She was also part of a break out session with Sarah Haywood and Diann Valentine and talked about “connecting with luxury clientele.”  She got to Cancun on Monday evening and was able to meet the organizer, Stacie Francombe, and the speakers at the welcome reception.

Nikki’s Talk in Moscow

Wednesday, December 17th, 2014

Early this year, we got a phone call from Russia.  Someone from the other end wished to speak with Nikki and identified herself as Kate from Wedding Business Summit.  This was regarding a conference they were putting together in Moscow in November and wanted Nikki to be one of the speakers.

Nikki's Talk in Moscow 1

There were three other speakers from the U.S that were invited to be part of this Summit.  Once the agreement was signed and all the obligations were fulfilled, Nikki left Los Angeles on Nov 21st to go to Moscow not knowing what to expect.  Youngsong from Wildflower Linens was her travel companion and also one of the speakers.  They were greeted at the airport by a gentleman that was hired by the Summit.  After checking in the hotel, they decided to freshen up and explore the city.  The weather was cold and it was fun to walk around in layers of clothes. They had an early dinner and decided to call it a night.

The next day they were driven to the venue where the Summit was taking place.  It was buzzing with the activity of enthusiastic planners eager to learn.  Nikki was introduced to the attendees and presented her talk amidst thunderous applause each time décor shots were shown and the background of each shot was explained.

There were a ton of questions after the talk as well as a panel discussion.

At the end of the Summit, the speakers were each given a plaque for participation.

Since the talk was over, they decided to venture to the city with the car and driver that was provided by the Summit.  Sergue, their guide, spoke perfect English and drove them around the city.

The next day, they decided to explore the city during daylight hours.  It had started to snow on Monday morning and the air was crisp and fresh. The first stop was the Kremlin.

As luck would have it, the manager at the hotel had worked at Beverly Wilshire and was thrilled to show us around as well as treat us to a decadent afternoon tea.  What a small world!  He also remembered Nikki’s event at the Rodeo Terrace with tents and canopies and a fashion show.  It was great to be indoors sipping the hot tea and chatting with the staff.

Cool as ICE!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

We had the opportunity to attend the inaugural Inner Circle Experience (ICE) this year, a conference held at the St Regis Bal Harbour Resrot in Miami! Sade Awe, the founder of the Bridal Circle, invited 50 influential people in the event planning world to the first Inner Circle Experience and we were so happy to be included!

PicMonkey Collage2

The first day we had a meet and greet in the morning with Alexis Maybank, co-founder of Gilt (which we shop on quite often). The day was then full of sessions from social media experts, to strategic visionaries for luxury brands.

Lunch was served at the J&G Grill where we were able to mingle and get to know the attendees over a delicious meal served family style by the restaurant

PicMonkey Collage25

Since the event is called The Inner Circle Experience, Jose Graterol created these sphere structures that were reminiscent of circles-very creative!

After our afternoon sessions, we had the chance to go up to our rooms, relax, and get ready for the welcome dinner that was in the pool area. It was such a beautiful night with the breeze blowing and the full moon’s reflection over the ocean right in front of us. The St Regis really outdid themselves on the food the entire stay. I loved the little gold faberge egg caviar cups-so thoughtful considering Geza von Habsburg was going to be speaking about the reign of Faberge the next day.

The next morning day was packed with sessions from Geza von Habsburg, the specialist in Faberge, to Chris Austin who is the VP of Global Luxury for Starwood Properties to Shaun Rowan, Director of Education for Jo Malone London

Another incredible lunch at the Atlantico Dining Room followed the morning sessions. Loved the linen provided by Nuage Designs!

The finale night was so fun! After our sessions, we had the opportunity to get pampered and glammed by Blushing Beauty for the evening Fete.

The room looked absolutely spectacular! It was as if we stepped into a modern day Gold and Mirror Gatsby party. As Sade mentioned, it is hard to “WOW” these attendees but we were all blown away! Hats off to Jose Graterol Designs, Redbliss, and Nuage Designs for making it all come together so beautifully.

Showcase at The Grand Del Mar Hotel in San Diego

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

Paige, from The Grand Del Mar (which happens to be our favorite hotel in San Diego), approached us a few months ago to help get a list of Indian vendors based in LA and surrounding areas to showcase the hotel.  Of course, leave it to Paige and Charles to go all out.  It was a beautiful setting fit for Maharajas and Maharanis.

Raj Tents did a superb job as always installing beautiful and colorful pergola tents all over the lawn.

The built-in gazebo structure on the lawn is the perfect backdrop for a baraat and receptions and looked stunning with the draping and gorgeous flowers by Kathy Wright.

Our own DJ, Ajay, from Special Occasions, filled the air with lovely background music.  Food stations were laid out beautifully and artfully all over the lawn and guests enjoyed the delectable ambiance and delicious food along with live entertainment provided by Sabrina Fox.

DIL (Developments in Literacy) Gala in Los Angeles

Wednesday, October 8th, 2014

Developments in Literacy, or DIL, is an organization very close to Nikki’s heart.  The organization was founded over a decade ago by Fiza Shah, who is a close friend of Nikki’s, and has now established schools in many under-privileged areas of Pakistan.  The objective of DIL, to which they have been very successful, is to promote female literacy in the remote, under-developed areas of Pakistan.  Since Nikki strongly believes in female education, she has always been a strong supporter of DIL.  She was on the board at the Los Angeles chapter for many years and helped in whatever capacity she could, even after stepping down.  Each year, DIL holds its annual gala fundraiser and this year the President of the Los Angeles chapter, Tehmina Jesrai, approached Nikki about doing a fashion show.

Developments in Literacy Gala 45

Needless to say, Nikki did not hesitate for a minute and was fully on board to provide help and get décor sponsorships like she did the previous year.  Tehmina invited three young and very talented designers from Pakistan: Nida Azwer, Misha Lakhani and Sania Maskatiya.

Nikki was asked to donate her services and have her team of vendors sponsor and underwrite the event which they willingly agreed to. The logistics, layout and design elements were discussed during the initial walk through.  Throughout the planning process, there were countless emails, phone calls and in-person meetings.  September 12th was the date set for the gala.  The day of the event, Nikki got to the venue in the morning with her team to begin the install.  By 4 pm, everything from lighting, rentals, flowers and AV were in place.  Guests started to arrive at 6:30 pm, which was the invited time.  Everyone enjoyed taking photos in front of step and repeat.  After enjoying hor d’oeuvres and drinks, guests were escorted to the South Hall where the fashion show and auction was going to take place.  After a welcome note from the President and a few speeches, a live auction was held during dinner.

A movie was shown of the progress DIL has made over the years and guests were asked to donate generously for this worthy cause.  The fashion show was a huge hit and the designers outdid themselves.  All three of them had a distinct style and flair.

DIL was able to raise a lot of money for this worthy cause and the evening ended on a high note.

Vivienne Westwood Rooftop Event in Los Angeles

Wednesday, October 1st, 2014

When I was approached by the Vivienne Westwood store in Los Angeles to design a sit down dinner for 50 of fashions most influential guests, I was incredibly excited! I have followed Vivienne Westwood for quite some time, and besides, who could forget Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding dress in Sex and the City?!

The dinner was to be on the rooftop of the LA store and it was in honor of the Blonde Salad’s Chiara Ferragni, a fashion blogger who will be moving from Italy to LA. The rooftop is dark gray and cream and knowing Vivienne Westwood’s style, I wanted to incorporate a lot of color and add her signature plaid to brighten it up.

My favorite thing to do is mix table seating so the 2 long tables had tufted leather benches in primary colors as well as acrylic chairs to add interest and texture to the space.

The place settings were really important to me so I chose a gothic style flatware and stemware that would go along with a rust color charger to again, give texture to the space.

When I spoke with Bess of Celadon Celery, I explained my vision to her regarding the flowers and the vases and she nailed it! The vases were covered in a plaid fabric and we used bright colored orchids and dahlias with tall candelabras painted in a bright blue.

I also added 4 large globe chandeliers to the 4 corners of the roof and a beautiful gilded mirror to soften everything up.

“The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco.”

Wednesday, June 11th, 2014

I have a client that was looking to book a non-hotel venue in San Francisco for her wedding next year.  My good friend Gene Higa who had lived in San Francisco and was very familiar with the city offered to accompany me and set up a few appointments.  Since he was already going to be in the city for a wedding he was shooting, I coordinated with him and decided to drive up the coastline with my husband.  As much as I dislike driving, I find the drive up north very soothing and relaxing.

We left the house on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. and were in San Jose at 2:30 p.m.  The weather was absolutely beautiful and very pleasant and due to traveling on a weekday, there was no traffic.  I had a couple of appointments in San Jose and after the meetings, we headed to the city. I have always loved San Francisco and the city inspires me tremendously.  It is so nice to see people walking, restaurants packed and hustle bustle in the city.  We found Mark Twain’s quote about the weather in the city to be befitting his quote, “The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco.”

After freshening up, we decided to get a recommendation from the concierge about a nice restaurant and he suggested Farallon, which was only a block away.  The food, service, ambiance was superb and the freshest of organic ingredients are used and menu is changed every day.  After a decadent start of the meal of lobster with avocado aioli sauce, lemon aioli sauce and a delicious salsa.  The entree consisted of the most delicious sole for me paired with fresh vegetables in a earthy broth and ended with delicious coffee. Since the next day was packed with back to back appointments, we walked back to the hotel and called it a night.

Thursday, my first appointment was at Blu Bungalow with Hazel.  I met with Gene and his wife Braja at the venue at 10:30 am.  Hazel is an amazingly warm person who is more than willing to share her thoughts and ideas.  The meeting was very productive and I left her place feeling like I could really trust her and partner with her in any future collaborations.

Our next appointment was at 1 p.m. at Legion of Honor.  As soon as we got there, I was transported back to the “palais de la legion d’honneur” on the left bank of the River Seine in Paris.  I have always loved that building and make it a point to visit when I am in Paris.  The California building is a 3/4 scale scale replica and was built in 1924.  The day was chilly and clear and you could see the Golden Gate Bridge. The venue sits amidst grown trees with lush flora and fauna. It is a perfect and beautiful venue for  for a baraat, ceremony and reception.  We were shown around the space, which has unlimited potential for holding unique events.

Our next appointment was at the City Hall of San Francisco.  What an amazing building with such personality and beauty!  We got a thorough tour of the space and discussed all the logistics of running an exquisite event in the venue.

Thank you gene and Braja for taking the time out of your busy schedule to accompany me and taking these beautiful photographs.  I truly got to see the city from your eyes, Gene.  Thank you Hazel for the wealth of knowledge about the city you shared with me so readily. I enjoyed each and every minute of my time spent with you and look forward to many more times together in your lovely city.
